1966 Ford Mustang questions and answers

Take a look at this great lense about the 1966 Ford Mustang.

Q: Why is my 1966 Ford Mustang running hot?
I have a 1966 Ford Mustang. It has a 289 and a 4 speed manual transmission. This car does fine on the open road but tends to run a little hot in the city despite having put a larger radiator in it. A friend mentioned removing the thermostat to allow water to run freely into the engine. Hopefully I can get confirmation that this would work or more alternatives.

A: Hunter, When you put the larger radiator in it did you put the larger fan on the engine as well? If not, you are not matching the amount of air flow through the radiator that is needed for city stop and go driving. You can remove the thermostat, but it really is not going to help as this is an air flow issue. Removing the thermostat will only allow the radiator to instantly start circulating coolant through the engine block. Which also reduces your heaters efficiency in the winter time. To ultimately fix the problem you will need to put the larger fan in to match the larger radiator you have in it now. Make sure you also have the fan shrouds in place that direct air flow and your fan matches these proportionately. The only other possible issue I could see you having would be with the fan itself. Your fan has a viscous clutch on the back of it. If it is going bad the fan is not spinning like it should to keep air flow maintained at lower speeds. It should turn by hand but stop turning when you remove your hand. Alot of hot rodders remove the fan clutches and go with flexing direct mount fans instead. It reduces horse power drag and increases air flow.

Q: Which radio should I install into my 1966 Ford Mustang?
I have three options: stock radio with a glove box radio, a retrosound, or custom autosound radio. My current AM stock radio does not work. I really like retrosound's fit and features, but I am afraid the modern looks will kill the classic style I am trying to maintain. And the Custom Autosound has he look, I have read surprisingly poor reviews. Ultimately I do not want to cut into the car, and I want original looking metal knobs, any help will be appreciated.

A: factory options, i hate a classic car like this gets a ricer make over, back in the day it wasnt about a freakin fancy chrome radio or shit, it was performance. do the stang a favor and put all factory options back in. only modern parts you need is, maybe a carpet, modifications, tires.

Q: Can i Restore a 1966 Ford Mustang?
I'm 17 and i really want to restore a 1966 Mustang. I feel like if i do this, it will give me a huge confidence boost. I love mustangs. Can i do it?

A: You can if...you learn all the trades necessary, welding, body work, upholstery, paint and assemble...do you have a old Mustang? Do you have the money for materials and parts? if the answer is yes to all these questions, then Yes, you can do it...

Q: 1966 Ford Mustang cosmetic question?
I just recently bought a '66 and it has side scoops that would resemble a GT. I want to put the regular emblems on there instead of the scoops. What do you think looks better? Side Scoops or the regular emblems?

A: well it depends on the rest of your car. is it a coupe convertable or fastback? In my opinion, the scoops look best on a fastback or coupe with shelby stripes. otherwise they look out of place. You also have the option of leaving it plain, using the 66 ones with the 3 "fingers" or the more simple 65 ones. The key is in keeping it with the rest of your car. If you have a stock looking paint job and wheels, i'd leave the scoops off for sure.

Q: Removing Vinyl Roof on a 1966 Ford Mustang GT? Is it difficult/possible?
Is is very difficult, if possible, to remove a vinyl roof on a 1966 Mustang GT? I assume that a repaint of the car will be necessary after the procedure. I would like to know this before i purchase the vehicle... thanks for your time... http://img151.imageshack.us/my.php?image=212800130001vv2.jpg http://img201.imageshack.us/my.php?image=212800140001qp8.jpg http://img151.imageshack.us/my.php?image=21280012xr7.jpg ps. what will i need to purchase or use for the procedure... 1966 Mustang GT's did not come out with a vinyl roof... thus removing it is returining it closer to it original state. I just fear that the original roof underneath is in poor condition or rusted.

A: It is just fabric glued in place. You may have to remove the trim. If you see what looks like bubbles under the edges of the material. That is rust. Stop. This is a big fix. And may require window removal and a body man. You will have to sand all this area and prime, before you paint. Good looking car too

Q: My 1966 Ford Mustang Alternator is not charging. Does anyone know the reason why?
I know its not the Alternator because i just bot it from autozone

A: could be a loose belt if it is squealing but more than likely the alternator has gone bad and will have to be replaced. i suggest that you take it off and take it somewhere to have it tested (most auto parts stores do this) . if is is not that and the car has a separate voltage regulator (which due to it being a 1966 i am assuming it does) that could could then be your problem. also check to make sure that all the connecting terminals are clean for the battery, alternator, voltage regulator ( if separate from alternator) and also check to make sure the starter connections are clean

Q: BMW m5 Engine swap to 1966 ford mustang?
is it possible? what are the other parts that i need to replace beside the engine and transmission?

A: Unless someone has made this swap, you won't find out what "other parts" you'll need until you do the project yourself. I'm sure they'll be a lot of fabrication involved but the end result should be a very unique and interesting vehicle. Go for it.

Q: My husband is in love with his 1966 Ford Mustang,?
he is constantly cleaning it, working on it, and driving it, how can I convince him to sell it? because I want to spend more time with him and so do his little kids :) Oh I don't him to divorce me I would be lost without him. PBLA - sounds like a good plan maybe I'll try that one night and see what he chooses

A: Stop trying to convince him to sell it. Here's what you do. Hang out with him when he's working on it. When he's cleaning it, help him clean it. It will get done faster. When he's driving it just for fun, join him. Whatever you do, stop whining about it. You want to draw him closer to you, not push him away, right? Be the kind of person he wants to be with.

Q: I have a beautiful 1966 Ford Mustang convertable. How can I get it into movies/commercials?

A: lots of people have it..u think everyone of them is in movies/commercials??? sell it and go for a ferrari!! or get a life!!

Q: what is the right spark plug gap for 1966 ford mustang with a 289 engine?

A: Short answer: The biggest gap you can do without getting a misfire. This is usually somewhere between .030 and .042, but can differ with ignition system. Oh, and I never trust the factory settings. I have had good factory settings, and I have had bad factory settings. One bad factory setting can really make you mad when troubleshooting a misfire. Oh, and I think he meant .035, not 0.35, since 0.25 is a quarter of an inch.

Q: Can i get fog lights for my 1966 Ford Mustang?

A: Are you looking for original lights? You would have to check collector car dealers for originals and expect to pay a lot for them. If you are not caring about the collector value then any aftermarket light kits can be adapted. You may have to upgrade your alternator to handle the lights but it can be done. The 66 Stangs did not have any spare power in their electrical systems.

Q: What is the setting for a 1966 Ford Mustang v6 .200 Spark Plug Gap setting?

A: call an auto parts store but I assume it's 0.35 on the plugs, thats what all the old cars were until they came out with electronic ignition in 1975.

Q: Is a 1966 ford mustang reliable?
Is it reliable for a college student? How is the mile per gallon (an estimant is OK)? and lastly, can i use regular gas (not premium) on it? V8 automatic transmission

i just recently bought a 1966 ford mustang and im going to paint it but im not sure what color will look the best. any suggestions or websites would be great! the color of the interior doesn't matter
