1998 Ford Ranger questions and answers
Take a look at this great lense about the 1998 Ford Ranger.
Q: Where exactly is the DPFE sensor located on a 1998 ford ranger, V6, 3.0, 4x4, automatic transmision?
I an looking for the DPFE sensor location on my 1998 ford ranger, v6, 3.0, 4x4, automatic transmision. I was told it is on the firewall, but I do not see it, or at least the part that I bought does not match anything on the firewall.
A: it is located to the right of the intake manifold. It will have an electrical plug and two 3/8" vacuum lines running to it.
Q: 1998 Ford Ranger runs rough with sulfur smell?
Truck was running okay before today. Not great as the acceleration wasn't what one would expect. I replaced the MAF last year along with various other objects inline like the fuel pump and filter, solenoid, etc. This reminds me of when my cadilletic converter went out in a car I used to have. It's a manual transmission, V6 3.0.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
A: Disregard what mauricio said about using a used catalytic converter. DON'T EVER use a used converter 1) it's federally illegal to do so and 2) you'll have no idea as to how soon it will fail and need to be replaced again. If you live in an area where emissions inspections are not required then remove the catalytic converter (but only if you have found it to be the culprit). The other suggestions are good ideas to look into first.
Q: I need the configuration for a 1998 ford ranger?
A: configuration for ??????????????????
Q: Where can I find a nice body kit for my 1998 Ford Ranger, neither razzi nor xenon?

Q: 1998 Ford Ranger Problems, possible fuel pump issue?
I started my truck this morning and it died instantly. Then I started it again giving it a little gas, it picked up a little, then died. I started it one more time, gave it gas, and it continued to raddle and shake a little and try to run, then die? What do you think, fuel pump? if so anybody got a diagram on how to fix it? Thanks!!!
A: it could be a fuel pump... but it sounds more like maybe a fuel filter... do you hear the the fuel pump pressure up when you turn the key on (listen close... some are pretty quiet) however it may be a timing issue... as far as a diagram you can go to autozone.com and find a detailed view of the part... just enter your info and it will walk you to where you need to be if your still not sure then get a mechanic to have a look... good luck!
Q: Whats a good price for a 1998 ford ranger 4X4 decent condition, 90k miles?
A: 3500 sounds fair
Q: where can i find a full custom pillar triple gauge pod for a 1998 ford ranger?
A: Your piller may not be long enough, there doesn't appear to be anything specific for a Ranger.
Sunpro makes a universal one that needs 19" to mount:

measure to make sure.
Q: change drive belt on 1998 Ford Ranger?
I have found the tensioner but need to know how to loosen it in order to remove the belt. There is the large bolt that is in the center of the pulley itself and then there is an inset bolt (smaller) on a piece behind the pulley (that has the belt wrapped around it).
Trying to replace the alternator.
Any information, pics or anything would be VERY helpful.
A: Look at the arm that the polley is fastened to. You should find a 3/8" square hole. Put you 3/8" drive ratchet in this hole and pull in the direction away from the belt. It is spring loaded. While holding tensioner released, slip belt off the alternator pulley, then release the tensioner.
Q: would you trade a 1998 ford ranger for a 2000 chrysler sebring couple?
A: me personally no, even though it is a Chrysler, but I prefer trucks myself
Q: I'm having a hard time driving my 1998 Ford Ranger?
I'm a new driver, and I've been trying to improve on driving my Ford Ranger my parents bought me. It's a stick shift and I stall... a lot. I've been driving it for 6 months now and I still stall more than necessary, only in first gear though. I don't know what I can do to be able to drive it smoothly. Any suggestions?
A: Practice starting with the parking brake slightly on. This will simulate starting on hills, and have Dad give a hand there. That's Dad's job to teach his baby to drive.
Q: 1998 Ford Ranger mileage?
I'm looking at a 1998 Ford Ranger that has 145,000 miles. I know that sounds high but I was wondering what these trucks normally run to. Any info would be great, thanks.
A: you didn't state which engine is has. If this one has a timing belt, you should make sure it has been replaced.
Q: 1998 Ford Ranger Camper Shell?
Does anyone know if they make a 1998 Ford Ranger Stepside camper shell? It seems as if they have never made one. Could you post a link if you find one?
I'm not looking for a camper, I'm looking for a shell/cap ...like Lund makes. However, I cannot find any for a stepside.
Thanks
A: The only way you can fix this little dilemma is this, you have to get it custom made to fit the back of the vehicle. Anything too big, and it will destroy the rear end suspension and shocks, anything too small, and nothing will fit inside it, let alone you. but you can go to your RV dealer they will help you select the right camper or camper shell for your make and year of your truck
Q: question about 1998 Ford Ranger air system?
I have a 98 ranger that has no freeon in it right now. my mom paid for air to be put in last summer and now it needs more. when we wereit up there the mechanic said that the truck needed freeon in it every summer because it's an older model truck and the air system is pretty much worn out. I was just wondering if that's true. if so, is there any way that I could purchase a new air system to be installed? if so, how much would it cost?
Thank You all! I'll take it to another mecahanic ASAP!! ^_^
A: If it's losing freon, it's because there's a leak somewhere. Take it to a different mechanic, preferably one who specializes in auto air conditioning systems.
He will put a colored dye in it and should be able to find where the leak is located.
Q: 1998 Ford Ranger wouldn't accelerate, then died..?
(1998 Ford Ranger - 4cyl. automatic, ~97,000mi)
Today I was driving to work, and I got less then a mile from my house when I started noticing that my truck wasn't accelerating. Check engine light came on, but all other instruments were normal. I decided to pull into a parking lot hoping I could turn around and go back to my house...only made it a few feet into the parking lot before the engine stuttered (shaking the truck back and forth significantly) and then died. I could restart the truck, but it would quickly stutter and die again. Battery is working fine, oil might be a little low (but will fix that), transmission fluid fine, temperature was normal, had plenty of gas, and tried restarting several times with the same stutter and die result. What could be wrong with my truck? Please help! Will provide other info if needed.
It was progressive...I noticed when I was pressing the gas pedal it only accelerated a little...next time, a little less, etc, until the gas pedal was unresponsive. It then stuttered and died. When I restarted the vehicle, it started and quickly stuttered and died...and this happened with every restart I tried. The truck is still sitting in that parking lot. When my bf comes home, we'll drive to it and try to restart it again when it's had about 4 hours rest.
A: 100% FUEL PUMP
HAD THE SAME PROBLEM
Q: 1998 Ford Ranger - AC problem?
I have a 1998 Ford Ranger 4.0 V6. The AC blows really cold when on MAX AC but if I turn the selector knob to AC, Vent or Defrost it blows maximum hot, and wide open. Not a problem in the summer in texas, definately a problem in the winter.
I think I have isolated the problem to the AC blend door actuator and the part is not expensive. My manual doesn't show me where the part is. Does anyone know where to find the actuator and what is involved in switching it out?
A: I'd take it to Ford and let them mess with it.
